Former head of the Islamic Community in BiH Mustafa Ceric proposed a new word for Eid in Bosnian language.

He said the word “Bajram”, which is used for hundreds of years, is not a Bosnian word. He proposed word “Hižaslav” to be used instead.

Former Rais-ul-Ulama wrote this in his greeting to the public on the occasion of the Eid, which will be celebrated on Tuesday.

The public was shocked by his proposal and many on social media mocked it, since word Bajram has deep roots in Bosnian tradition.

Ceric said Bajram is not Bosnian nor Turkish, but Persian word, which means “celebration”, while Arabs use word “id” which means “return” or “comeback”:

He said he combined the meanings of those two words and found an appropriate word in Bosnian. According to him, “hiža” means house in old-Bosnian, while “slav” is a short form of the verb “slaviti” (to celebrate).
