Works on construction of a new thermal power plant in Gacko will start by the end of the year. The construction is fully funded by Bank of China, which will soon have to decide which of three of their companies will get a job.

The works are estimated at 500-600 million Euros, and should last five years. The construction site will engage about 1,000 workers, of which 400 from the Republika Srpska – said Srdjan Milovic, Director of TPP Gacko.

Today's power plant in Gacko was built in the 1980s, with the installed capacity of 350 megawatts. It produces 30 percent of the energy in the RS, but is on its technological end. The new plant needs to replace it for five years and the new technology should bring cleaner air and a healthier environment in Gacko.

The level of utilization of energy in the old plant is 30 percent, while new technology brings the degree of utilization of 42 percent, which is consistent with the highest energy and environmental standards. The degree of energy efficiency of the new plant is 60 percent higher than in the old power plant.

Great potentials

– “Buk Bijela” and “Dubrovnik 2” on Trebjesa are hydro resources in which there is great interest by investors, and the RS needs to get engaged in the construction of these power plants at full capacity – says Milovic.

– Middle Drina is also promising and if the energy sector is joined with Serbia, this would be a strategic matter for the two countries. Of course, Bosna and Neretva rivers provide great potential for producing electricity and it seems that we finally have serious investors, interested in building, he adds.
