The Karaula tunnel, on the main road linking Sarajevo with Tuzla, has been opened for traffic.
The construction of the tunnel, worth BAM 27 million (13.8 million euro), was conducted by Austria’s Strabag with Bosnian firm Entea acting as subcontractor, under a deal signed with state-owned road company JP Ceste FBiH in April 2014.
The Karaula tunnel, which will shorten the length of the road connecting the capital of Sarajevo with Tuzla, in the north of the country, is one of three phases in the construction of a section on the M-18 highway.
So far, two phases have been implemented – the construction of the 902 m long tunnel and two bridges with lengths of 130 m and 150 m, respectively.
The third phase includes the construction of a 1,506 m long road section and another two bridges, 279 and 130 m in length.
Excavation works on the tunnel officially began in June 2014. Completion was envisioned to take place in October 2015.
